The Organ Transplant Fund

Update: Organ Transplant Fund Transfer

Effective July 1, 2025, the Rhode Island Legislature updated RI General Laws § 42-11-13 transferring the administration of the Organ Transplant Fund to the Rhode Island Department of Human Services (DHS).  Effective immediately, all requests and inquiries related to the Organ Transplant Fund Program including new applications, and reimbursement requests should now be submitted to DHS.

Rhode Island Organ Transplant Fund

The Rhode Island Organ Transplant Fund helps Rhode Island residents and their families pay for certain non-reimbursed costs related to organ transplants.

Who Can Apply?

  • Rhode Island residents (must live in the state for at least 1 year before the transplant)
  • Transplant recipients who have health insurance that covers organ transplants
  • Families with income below 700% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)

What Costs Are Covered?

The Fund does not cover the full cost of a transplant but may help with:

  • Insurance costs: COBRA premiums (up to 6 months)
  • Hospital & medical services not fully covered by insurance
  • Prescription drugs for transplant maintenance (50% coverage of eligible costs)
  • Out-of-state living expenses during transplant (up to 60 days, at state per diem rates)
  • Lifetime maximum reimbursement of $15,000 (based on eligibility and available funds)

How to Apply

  • Complete and submit the Organ Transplant Fund application
  • Provide proof of insurance coverage, a copy of the most recent Rhode Island Tax Return, and non-reimbursed costs
